LAKE EYASI

Begin Your Lake Eyasi Safari Adventure Here

Lake Eyasi, a vast saline lake in Tanzania, is even larger than the famous Lake Manyara. Its size fluctuates dramatically throughout the year, expanding and contracting based on seasonal rainfall. During dry periods, the water levels drop so low that the local Datoga and Hadzabe tribes can walk across the lakebed. The lake is surrounded by Doum palms, whose cooling shade provides respite in this harsh environment. Known for its spectacular sunsets, Lake Eyasi is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. The impressive western flank of the Rift Valley forms a stunning backdrop to this wild and scenic destination.

The northeastern tip of Lake Eyasi lies beneath the shadow of Oldeani Mountain, on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lake stretches for about 50 miles in a northeast-southwest direction, below a 3,000-foot escarpment that forms the southeastern boundary of Serengeti National Park and the Maswa Game Reserve. To the southeast, the Yaida Valley is home to the Hadzabe tribe, one of Tanzania’s most fascinating indigenous groups.

While Lake Eyasi isn’t a game destination, its natural beauty and cultural significance make it an exceptional stop on any Tanzania safari. Visitors have the chance to gain authentic insight into the way of life of the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. For travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path cultural immersion, a visit to the Hadzabe near Lake Eyasi is a must. Explore   Tanzania Adventure Experiences for more opportunities to engage with local communities in a meaningful way, supporting their way of life.

THE HADZABE TRIBE AT LAKE EYASI

Lake Eyasi remains one of the few places in Africa where tribal life has remained relatively untouched by modern development. The Hadzabe people have lived here for over 10,000 years, maintaining their ancient hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Visiting the Hadzabe offers a rare and unforgettable glimpse into this timeless culture.

Guests have the unique opportunity to stay overnight in Hadzabe communities, experiencing firsthand how they continue to hunt, gather honey, and live off the land despite the pressures of development. Watching an early morning hunting display, witnessing traditional dances, and learning about their way of life are highlights of the experience. The Hadzabe live in caves and traditionally wear minimal clothing, using small pieces of animal skin to cover their bodies.

Unfortunately, the Hadzabe’s way of life is endangered, as much of their land has been taken over by commercial development. That’s why any tour company working with the Hadzabe must focus on supporting and preserving their valuable traditions. A visit to their community offers a profound cultural experience, set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Eyasi.

A visit to their community is a cultural experience not to be missed, and it all happens against the backdrop of beautiful Lake Eyasi. Read more about what we can learn from the Hadzabe

THE DATOGA TRIBE AT LAKE EYASI

The Datoga, like the Maasai, are pastoralists, but they also possess a unique skill as silversmiths. They craft iron tools, including tips for spears, knives, and other implements, which they trade with the Hadzabe in exchange for honey and fruits. Thought to have migrated from the Horn of Africa around 3,000 years ago, the Datoga have retained many of their ancient traditions. Their clothing is adorned with colorful beads, and women often bear facial scarification as a form of beauty. The Datoga’s attire blends harmoniously with their environment, featuring reddish-brown colors that mimic the surrounding soil. Their distinctive clothing includes patched leather dresses, bead necklaces, and bracelets. One of the most striking cultural features of the Datoga is the intricate facial scarification, creating circular patterns around their eyes, which set them apart from other tribes.
